What Animal Are You?

Most people know their Western sign by heart — but the Chinese zodiac follows the lunar calendar, and the year can turn over right in the middle of February. Pick your birth year, month and day, and your animal, your Five-Elements animal, and your Western sign appear in ten seconds.

Why the date matters: the Lunar New Year boundary

Chinese zodiac years run from one Lunar New Year to the next, and the New Year always falls between January 21 and February 20. That is why two people born on the same side of the New Year can carry different animals. For example, in 2025 the New Year fell on January 29: born on January 28, you are still a Dragon of 2024; born on January 29, you are a Snake of 2025.

Some schools draw the boundary differently — at Lichun, the early-February solar term called “beginning of spring” — and the two methods agree most years, but not all. If you were born in late January or early February, it is worth knowing exactly which rule a source used.
