October Birthstone: Opal for Libra, Topaz for Scorpio

October is the one month that hands out two stones. The October birthstone is opal — a stone that answers light instead of holding a color of its own. But October also splits between two signs, and the tradition gives them different stones: opal for Libra, topaz for Scorpio. If you were born in this month, both readings belong to you.

What each stone means

Opal is the least fixed of the stones. It shows blue, green, fire or milk depending on where the light lands, which is why the old lapidaries treated it as the stone of moods we cannot name yet. The tradition calls it protective in a quiet way: not a shield, but a filter. Topaz is the steady one — a stone of clear sight, warmth, and the kind of honesty that does not need to be blunt to be true.
