Chinese Zodiac Compatibility: Who Matches Whom in the Tradition

Ask whether two people match and the tradition answers with a short, specific list rather than a feeling. Each animal names exactly three others — and the lists are mutual: if yours names theirs, theirs names you back. That symmetry is the most interesting thing about the system, and it takes ten seconds to check.

What each animal names

The Rat names the Ox, the Dragon and the Monkey. The Ox names the Rat, the Snake and the Rooster. The Tiger names the Horse, the Dog and the Pig. Read a few and a pattern shows up: each animal names one closest partner plus the two others that complete its group of three. Rat, Dragon and Monkey belong together; so do Ox, Snake and Rooster. Why the lists agree

Nothing forces the lists to agree, and yet they do, completely — every animal's three matches name it back. That is a structure rather than a preference: closeness here is drawn as a shape, not a sentiment. What it does not say

It does not say a pairing outside the list is doomed, and no honest reading claims otherwise. What the tradition describes is a dynamic: with some animals the ground is already level, with others the things you need will have to be said plainly, early, and more than once.
